Yippee…it’s FINALLY spring! And that means celebrating with some spring door decor. I know that the warmer weather will come and go for the next two months and we’ve probably not seen the last of the snow here yet, but The official start of the spring season in late March always gives me renewed hope!

In honor of the first day of spring, and a spate of gloriously mild weather to match, I decided to get a bit of new seasonally appropriate decor installed on my front door. You may recall my fall door basket , which was replaced with our winter holiday wreath.
I’m embarrassed to admit my winter wreath stayed up well beyond Valentines Day when I finally took it down, and my door has been naked ever since waiting for a new season. Well that season has arrived!! Hallelujah.
Door baskets are an easy-to-change option for seasonal decor and can be filled with different flowers, branches, and greens to suit the season. As with any decorating project, keep in mind the colors of the fixed finishes - in this case the house, trim, and door colors - when selecting your container and the contents.

The forsythia I cut and brought in to force opened into a glorious burst of spring yellow in just 3 or 4 days!
First came the call from my Mom that she had a bunch of beautiful pussy willows from the bush in her yard that has been there forever - what could be more springlike than pussy willows (except maybe forsythia!)? I hightailed it up to pick up a bundle and she had SO many, I shared them with 3 other friends and I STILL have tons left!
The pussy willow stems were so long the cut ends rode shotgun and the branches filled the back of the car. And they were so big and soft and almost white! Okay, they aren’t quiiiite big enough to qualify as pets, but almost! Cut pussy willows just dry and stay beautiful for years - I always have a big vase of them in the corner of my living room.
I used a rustic flat basket (similar here) as the container for my door arrangement. I started by stuffing in a couple pieces of floral foam to hold the stems in place. After that I added some pussy willows, some faux azalea plants that have spent some time in my window boxes in past years (faux is totally fine if you do it right), along with some faux ivy I keep on hand.
I made a bow with 3 types of green wired ribbon of varying widths and textures, and wired it to a stick to poke into the floral foam.
Voila! I love the spring colors against my black front door!

Next I need to find something for the urns that flank the front steps. Right now they still have an assortment of cut greens (I DID edit out the pine ones that had turned brown). A visit to our wholesale nursery proved a little early to have much to choose from. And nothing available right now was a very nice combo with my door basket.
Though I might go back and get these Lenten Roses. Hellebore is the actual name, but the common name, Lenten Rose (for the early spring blooming season that coincides with Lent), sounds so much more pleasant! Hellebore sounds like some supremely unattractive garden varmit?!
But they did have some herbs already, which we can hopefully keep alive until it’s warm enough for them to be transplanted to the porch pots. In the meantime, they’ll vacation on the porch during the warmer days, and cuddle up on the dining room sideboard during cold spells.
We’ve started with mint (hello, mojito’s!), basil, rosemary, and cilantro - that last one is a concession to the rest of the household. I personally loathe cilantro.

And I’m daydreaming about procuring one of these cement fountains for the garden - they provide such a delightful background noise - and maybe even trying to keep one of these topiary Camellia’s alive! My track record with plants is a little spotty.
I also got a replacement for the Myrtle grandplant that I inadvertently murdered - I owed the Diva a new one! Myrtle 2.0 is sunning herself on the porch today…
