Should I hire an interior designer?
The short answer is YES. If you want to ...
Save time
A designer should have the experience and know-how to diagnose what is bugging you about your house and come up with several possible solutions tailored exactly to your situation. OR you can spend your precious free time scouring websites and magazine articles looking for someone with your exact design dilemma who found a viable solution you like and then assessing all the options for implementing it and trying to figure out which is the best real value. The choice is yours, of course.
Save money
A designer can give you expert advice about where to spend and where to save for the most impact from your investment. There are hundreds of shades of white (or grey, or beige) and they all have different undertones – how many times are you going to paint your walls to figure that out on your own? An experienced designer has specified hundreds of paint colors, finishes, textiles, furnishings, millwork designs, window treatments and all the myriad other ingredients that go into a successful room, and they can tell you all the pros and cons of each option and what will work together best to accomplish your goals and meet your budget. And they will help you avoid ending up with a beige sofa that looks pink because the beige in the rug has green undertones…or a cabinet piece that looked so good in the showroom with its warehouse proportions but overwhelms your living room after you shoe-horned it in...which brings me to my next point.
Save heartache
A designer can help you avoid expensive mistakes; Things you have to get rid of or live with because they are too expensive to replace. Or ill advised fads that turned out not to be so ‘classic’ after all. Designers can help you understand what is a fad vs a trend vs a classic and what is an appropriate purchase in each category...remember the delightful “harvest gold” and “avocado” bathrooms and kitchens from the 70’s?? Or the shiny brass bathroom faucets from the 90’s? Tile lasts forever, people. Choose it wisely!
Unless you have the unlimited funds and patience to change anything that turns out to be a mistake, get some expert guidance. And not from a store who is only interested in unloading their au courant inventory, either. Get it from someone who works for YOU, who has your best interests at heart, and your goals and budget in mind.
I believe EVERYONE’s life is enhanced by thoughtful, good design. And spending money on expertise means the money you spend on any purchases will be spent wisely.
