Sherwin Williams Color of the Year 2023

Sherwin Williams just announced THEIR color of the year for 2023 and it is….Redend Point…”the color of warmth and soul”. Also I’m pretty sure the color of pantyhose I had back in the 80’s.

In design circles, we know it is fall when all the paint companies start naming their Color of the Year for the following calendar year. They all have marketing copy that explains the rationale and mood they predict will resonate with consumers.

For Redend Point it is…
“Embrace a spirit of connection with the world around us with this soulful-yet-subtle hue…bring home the warmth and intrigue of Redend Point.”

Okay…

In the right space with the right lighting, I’m sure it has a place in the universe, but it’s just not my favorite.  They had so many lovely options to choose from in their color deck…this would not have been my first (or second or third) choice for color of the year.

Sherwin Williams Color Palette

Associations with a color are what most often drive a strong reaction to it.  I ldon’t associate this color with “warmth and intrigue”. To me, it says …pantyhose, cheap makeup, and cat urk…

If you want to paint your walls in a makeup color, there are so many other makeup color options instead of bad-makeup-beige…like blush, or coral, or lipstick red, that might be prettier or more interesting.

If warm and subtle and beige is what you are after, here are some neutral beiges without the pink afterglow

HGTV Home also chooses a Sherwin WIlliams color for their color of the year and they chose Darkroom, a soft black with a hint of chocolate-plum.  Haha, that sounds like a dramatic reading of the back of a wine bottle. But a way better choice than the pinky beige IMO.

Autocorrect insists Redend should be Resend…maybe autocorrect is onto something there…resend…reselect…

What do YOU think of Redend Point? Love it? Hate it? Yawn?

With Behr choosing an off white and Sherwin Williams choosing an off-beige, it will be fascinating to see if the rest of the paint companies also choose neutrals for 2023.
