Decorating with Pink
Since the recent introduction of the Barbie movie, #barbiecore (there seems to be a #*core for everything these days!) decoration and the color pink in general are enjoying a surge in populatity!
So today I’m updating our pink post from 2 years ago with new pictures and bringing you some stellar rooms decorated in pink. Although pink is not usually my go-to color, these beautiful iterations have me rethinking using it more often.
If you are considering adding some pink but want to avoid ending up with a life size version of Barbie’s dream house, read on.
From subtle blush to vivid fuchsia, there is a shade of pink for every mood! Pinks can be warmer, peachy pinks or cooler more blue-purple pinks and like all colors, they can range in intensity and hue.
While many color trend forecasts pointed to blue or green shades in recent years, Benjamin Moore’s color of the year for 2020 was an ethereal shade of pink called First Light (you can read all about what colors pair well with First Light in THIS post),
This year Benjamin Moore chose a saturated pink shade called Raspberry Blush for 2023 color of the year, and Pantone chose Viva Magenta for their 2023 color of the year. It’s almost like they knew Barbie would be an “influencer” this year!
Pink Paint
The easiest and most obvious way to use pink in decorating is with paint on walls, ceilings, or cabinetry.
Please note: Many of the images in this post are not real rooms - they are AI images from my imagination using text prompts in midjourney to illustrate what I am talking about - these are labeled as such for clarity.
This serene bedroom illustrates the power of using the right shade of pink to create a flattering warm glow in a sophisticated room for grown ups.
This paneled powder room is dramatic and moody in a vibrant shade of magenta paired with marble and gold accents.
While this is not a real room, since I’ve been asked for the color, the paint color is quite similar to Benjamin Moore’s Drop Dead Gorgeous 1329. As always, checking the sample in the space you are painting is SO important as colors look very different in different lights and circumstances!
This fabulously chic ladies home office is from a Boston area project we did. You can see more about it HERE. The fuchsia pink painted ceiling adds drama, while pale pink walls, pink embroidered floral panels, pink area rug, and Chanel-inspired pink tweed chairs are paired with white and green accents.
This potting/flower arranging area sports pink cabinets - which seems fitting for a place devoted to flowers! Open shelving, muted cabinets, marble counters, and a farmhouse sink all evoke a country house mood.
Pink Fabric
Pink fabrics are a great way to add a touch of pink without committing to a whole room enveloped in the color.
This otherwise neutral room shows a charming pair of raspberry sherbet velvet chairs by the fireplace.
My parents have had their pink taffeta sofa for many years - they were waaaay ahead of the pink trend! We moved it to their new apartment last year when they downsized from their home of 57 years, and it still adds a touch of happy color to their living room. You can see the whole apartment paint palette HERE.
Classic pink and white stripes cover a pretty windowseat along with pink and white embroidered pillows in this imaginary dressing room. Paired with white millwork and mirrored panels and a coffered ceiling with pink detailing, the space is feminine but with a restrained elegance.
In this garden inspired family room from a greater Boston area project of ours, we used an oversized pink and white houndstooth check on a pair of comfy reading chairs by the stone fireplace.
Pink Wallpaper
Pink wallpaper immediately calls to mind the cutesy nursery prints and precious ditsy flower patterns of yore. But the pink chinoiserie wallpaper in this imagined dining room shows how striking and elegant a pink wallpaper can be. Pairing pink wallpaper with white millwork and mahogany furniture strikes an updated classic note.
Pink Accessories
From lamps to mirrors to small furnishings, there are a myriad of ways to add pink to a room without going all-in with paint or wallpaper. For the person who has everything, or a least has an “eclectic Hollywood Regency inspired metropolitan interior”, there is this ostrich feather lamp…
The description on the 1stDibs site: “Contemporary lamp with golden resin stem and pink colored ostrich feathers. Decorative luxury piece that fits well in an eclectic Hollywood Regency inspired metropolitan interior. We can also offer the larger floor lamp model.” Available for only $3750 (plus shipping)?! Sadly, it is sold…
