Antique Colonial Living Room Refresh
Today we are sharing a comfortable living room refresh in this beautifully maintained 17th century antique Colonial.
We have been working with these delightful clients on and off for the last 30+ years and have now worked in nearly every space in the house. They have been remarkabl caretakers of this historic property - the house is lucky to have them!
Most recently, we completed the dramatic pocket powder room makeover we shared HERE.
Simultaneous to that project, we tackled a partial update of the living room.
Many years ago, we refreshed this room with rearranged furniture, paint, new custom window treatments, an area rug, and new slipcovers for a pair of wing chairs.
But the time had come to rethink the seating pieces and make the room a more comfortable, updated space to host book club meetings and snuggle time with grandchildren.
Keeping the fresh green and cream color scheme meant the classic wilton trellis rug, beautiful embroidered linen drapery panels, and kicky slipcovered wing chairs could stay.
We explored a few options for the seating arrangement.
Out went the formal chippendale settee and coffee table, and in came a cushy sectional and a large round table/ottoman for feet-up inviting comfort.
We selected a neutral oatmeal performance fabric for the sectional, and green and white geometric and floral fabrics for the 3 pillows that came with it. For the large round ottoman, we used a deep green velvet and dark wood finish.
The round ottoman means no sharp corners for children to bump into. PRO TIP: add a large tray and the ottoman does double duty as a coffee table as well as a footstool or extra perching space for large gatherings.
We styled the ottoman with the classics - coffee table books, a pretty green candle, and a generous pitcher of fresh cut flowers.
Both the sectional and the chairs needed more throw pillows to look inviting and pulled together, and a selection of custom ones in a variety of fresh greens was the perfect finish.
A darker mid-toned textured strie fabric was used on kidney pillows for the two wing chairs, carrying the darker shade onto the pastel slipcovers to balance that side of the room.
The sofa was treated to pillows in cream and green stripes, an embroidered trellis that echoes the rug, and a GORGEOUS statement pillow in a green embroidered botanical.
The overall effect is subtle, elegant, and sophisticated, a perfect reflection of the room and the homeowners!
