Peek at a Project: Rhapsody in Blue House
Today we are sharing a some photos from a nearly completed project.
Our clients downsized from a large suburban home. They opted for a new construction home in a development. Purchasing pre-construction meant we were able to choose their lot for the orientation that would make the living spaces light and bright all day, and to modify the builder plans to something more suitable for their priorities.

Close to their daughter and one floor living make this the perfect retirement home. Once construction was complete, we started the decorating phase keeping to our planned blue, taupe, and white palette.
While a new sofa, ottoman, swivel chairs, counter stools, bed, and dresser were purchased for the new house, we were able to reuse many of homeowners existing pieces. Several pieces were reupholstered to work in the new space.
Limiting the color palette in a smaller, mostly open plan space is important so that the rooms flow and feel spacious and gracious. For a look at the process of selecting the textiles for this project, check out THIS post.
Kitchen
Our client loves to cook and entertain family and friends. We kept the kitchen light and bright with white cabinetry, large windows, marble-look quartz counters, and a taupe subway tile backsplash.

Open pendants without glass are muuuuch easier to keep clean in a kitchen. This pair of orbs in a champagne finish adds a touch of glamour in a kitchen that is open to the living area.

A contrasting navy island houses a microwave and wine fridge and separates the open plan kitchen from the dining area. Swivel stools covered in a performance fabric are the perfect perch for visiting grandchildren!

Dining Area
A contemporary organic patterned rug in shades of blue and taupe anchors the dining table. Chair seats for the homeowners dining set were reupholstered in a hardworking performance fabric that perfectly complements the rug and drapery fabrics.
A triple sliding door floods the space with light and offers views of the back deck and yard. Working draperies allow for light control and privacy.

Living Room
The living room section of the space has a vaulted ceiling and features a gas fireplace and another triple window for a light filled room.
A custom built large cocktail ottoman with sexy acrylic feet is upholstered in another performance fabric and functions as a coffee table, footstool, and extra seating.
A sofa separates the living room from the dining area. An assortment of plump textured velvet and embroidered pillows and a cozy throw lend comfort, color and style to the neutral sofa.

The chimney breast was painted a deep blue accent color. This helps camouflage the TV, highlights the fireplace, and balances the blue of the kitchen island in this end of the room.

Primary Bedroom
The primary bedroom is a wonderful retreat. Embroidered and printed pillows and a matelasse coverlet and shams top the king size navy velvet upholstered bed. A new tweed wool rug adds softness underfoot.
Custom draperies of embroidered linen hang from custom iron rods. White wooden blinds offer light control and privacy.

Building is never easy, and it is even more challenging in the middle of a pandemic. In spite of all that, we were able to streamline the decision-making process and help our clients get the retirement home of their dreams.
Once we came in to add the finishing touches…pillows, throws, and styling, my client sat down in her living room with me this week and exclaimed “this is exactly what I dreamed it would be!”
Now THAT is music to my ears!
