Behr 2023 Color of the Year Announcement
We know it is officially fall because the paint companies start naming their “Color of the Year 2023” in the fall.
In addition to yummy hot cider donuts showing up at the orchards , pumpkin spiced everything (#notafan), and sweater weather, all the major paint companies select a color each fall to be crowned Color of the Year for the coming year.
Supposedly this is a well thought out thing based on consumer trends and the state of the world blah, blah, blah… A marketing tool, to be sure…or maybe they just made waaay too many cans of the color…who knows?
Last year almost every single paint company picked some shade of green for 2022, so maybe there is some behavioral research involved.
Most likely they are sitting around at the 11th hour with a bunch of empty take out containers and HAVE to make a decision.
You can see that some years, the discussion has been heated and consensus could not be reached because some companies have cheated and picked more than one color of the year…is that even grammatically legal??
Anyway, lo and behold in my inbox today appeared the Behr announcement for their color of the year 2023. And the color is….drumroll please….
Blank Canvas.
Not exactly riveting, but certainly agreeable. In the paint beauty pageant, it definitely wins the Miss Congeniality award.
It is a warm white. Behr likens it to White Dove by Benjamin Moore, and it is indeed almost identical. Behr calls it “…a hopeful and welcoming warm white with limitless possibilities”. Okay sure.
It definitely pairs well with any number of other colors. It would be a good choice for a white exterior color and a companionable millwork or wall color for many interior spaces.
It is warm without being too creamy. Next to most colors it looks quite white. It is pretty aptly named as a blank canvas that goes with nearly everything and a color on which many other colors can be layered.
While plain vanilla is not a particularly exciting choice, it is not controversial either. It’s hard to actively dislike white!
Pair it with neutrals for an airy feel, or with accent colors for more dramatic interest.
As we ALWAYS advise, be sure to check the samples of ANY paint colors in the space and light conditions where they will be used. The paint chip at the store (or on your computer screen) may look very different than the color will when in your space!
