Project Preview: A Lake House Bedroom
Nothing says lake house like watery shades of blue with a hefty dose of neutrals. Our client was a busy executive with a job that required a lot of travel, and she wanted her petite home by the lake to be a retreat with a touch of glamour. It is important, especially in a small home, for the color to flow from one room to the next.
In the adjacent living room, white walls, and wood floor and beams form the backdrop for a deep blue velvet chaise sofa and colorful rug and artwork, but in the bedroom, we wanted something in more muted, restful tones.
On her new bedroom wish list were:
An upholstered sleigh bed
More efficient closet and storage space
A washer and dryer close by
A peaceful color scheme
Existing Assets:
Lovely hardwood floors
Pretty French doors at the entry from the living room
Three windows
Existing Challenges:
Poorly designed and too small closet and a mismatched shallow built-in cupboard breaking up the longest wall
A newly built wall to accommodate a stackable washer/dryer was not deep enough to add a door thus the appliances would be visible in the bedroom
In desperate need of window treatments for privacy and light control
Existing First Floor (with the recently furnished LR) The bedroom is the room on the lower left. Future plans will reorganize the dining area and open up the back wall with full glass doors to capitalize on the view and increase access to the deck, as well as building more efficient storage into the end wall.
Moving the ill-placed storage closet to the far wall and pulling the bathroom door forward allowed us to have a larger closet and incorporate the washer/dryer into the bathroom, rather than the bedroom. This freed up space for the desired sleigh bed on either of two walls. Both plans below use the same furniture pieces.
In a small space, every piece of furniture counts - These bedsiide chests include built-in outlets and under cabinet nightlights as well as good storage. A tufted upholstered bed, metallic silver finishes on furniture, and a sexy floor lamp provide a bit of glam, while simple glass lamps, and the antiqued clock and mirror give a nod to the cottage bones of the house. Here are the furnishings we selected for this room
Window trim and stained wall and ceiling timbers would all be painted cloud white and the windows would have 2” white wood blinds for privacy and light control, topped with simple full length curtain panels in a pale blue linen. The ceiling would be painted in mountain mist. Paint colors all by Benjamin Moore.
